UPNG launches CCTV System

An exciting time for the University of Papua New Guinea as it prepares for its 60th Anniversary in 2025, and an even more exciting milestone for University of Papua New Guinea to have its Uniforce Security successfully launched the CCTV system which is now
in full effect at the University’s Main Waigani Campus. The CCTV system, as part of the University’s CCTV Project, covers all the ‘hot spots’ within the campus, including the main entry to the University’s Waigani Campus, the Halls of Residence, the School Buildings, the University Clinic, the Central Administration and Student Services Buildings, and the Forum Square. In order to help minimize the illegal activities, student unrests, and other disturbances on campus, the CCTV system will be of assistance to the Uniforce Security to response to matters promptly. The CCTV system is designed to monitor, and help prevent and detect crimes and illegal activities. It is also a reassurance to the staff and students about community safety.

Speaking during the launching event, today (Wednesday 30 October 2024) at the Waigani Campus, the Chief of Uniforce Security, Mr. Michael Kupo, said, during the installation and configuration process, the team detected criminal activities along the University’s perimeter fence towards Morata, and also were able to apprehend students selling betel-nuts at the Forum Square area. With the new CCTV system now in place, the Uniforce Security can be able to capture and detect illegal activities and intrusion on campus.

“The system will also allow the Uniforce Response Unit to respond effectively and be on the ground on time to execute necessary measures, such as identifying students and apprehending those participating in illegal activities, and reporting them to the Student Disciplinary Committee, or the Police,” said Mr. Kupo. “The School of Business & Public Policy, the Michael Somare Library, and the University Bookshop have their CCTV’s already installed, and we are proud to announce that most of the University Campus is now covered by the CCTV System,” added Mr. Kupo.

The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Cecilia Nembou congratulates the Uniforce Security and everyone involved in the project and for making it happen, and said the University Management expects the Security Incidents on campus to be more manageable.
“We can never solve our problems as far as students are concern, but we can always manage them”, added Dr. Nembou.
Despite the challenges and issues faced during the implementation of the CCTV System, the Uniforce Security with the support of the University Management, and the help of the University ICT and TE PNG, successfully installed and launched the CCTV System on Campus.
